This past January young goalkeeper Gian Tapia traveled from Australia to El Salvador, (the native land of his mother) with the intention of showcasing his qualities and abilities to the Salvadoran national team coaches.

Young Tapia spent 12 days in El Salvador; during his stay Gian took part in different events organized by Fundacion Educando un Salvadoreno FESA. Upon his arrival Gian participated in a 10k run organized by FESA to raise funds for the education of many of the FESA student athletes.

During the following days Gian trained with kids his age at FESA, as well as kids from older categories, and the reserve squad of The Salvadoran 1st division side Atletico Marte FC. Gian impressed the coaches with his technique, fast leg movement and dedication on the pitch.

Tapia was later seen and evaluated by The El Salvador U-17 head coach Jose Luis Rugamas and assistant coach Esteban Coppia. Gian was first observed during a goalkeeper training session, which included goalkeepers from third division side Turin, as well as keepers from first division side Atletico Marte. The second opportunity that Gian had to showcase his abilities was on scrimmage games played at the Historic Jorge Magico Gonzales Stadium in San Salvador. It was there where Gian finally had the opportunity to show what he can do on the pitch. Gian not only showcased his abilities on the goal, but also his great personality by constantly directing his defensive line. At his young age, Gian showed great personality on the field, which left the coaches very pleased. Gian Tapia with an impressive size of over 1.90 in height showed great technique on ground balls as well as great ball control with both legs.

Jose Luis Rugamas, head coach of the Salvadoran U-17, was very pleased with Gian qualities and invited him to stay training with a group of players that has been selected from all over the country, however, Tapia was not able to accept the invitation due to school obligations back home in Australia. Gian was able to show his great potential to the Salvadoran coaches and will be taken into account for future call-ups for the Salvadoran U-17 National team.

Gian enjoyed his stay in El Salvador and hopes to return soon to wear the blue and white jersey of El Salvador.
